Timeline 99 -- 2008

JAN 2008: On January 12, 2008 author Mark Wills places The Game Writer's Toolkit into the public domain. The software, written in 1991 for Mini Memory, was marketed by Abbots Software, which was the street that Mark Wills lived on at the time.

  • The TI99ers On-Line User Group begins tracking “Landmark Programs” written for the TI-99 and Myarc Geneve 9640.

MAY 2008: The 2008 Jim Peterson Achievement Award is given to CF7A+ creator Jaime Malilong in the TI-99/4A category, and to Myarc owner Lou Phillips in the Myarc Geneve 9640 category.

OCT 2008:  The 26th Annual Chicago TI Faire takes place on October 25th in Evanston, IL.  During the Faire Tom Wills is selected by the Birdwell Trustees to be the recipient of the 2008 John Birdwell Award, and the Rob Tempelman Plat award, given annually by the Dutch and Chicago TI User Groups for the best TI website is given to the www.TI99ers.org/timeline web site with Bill Gaskill's information on the history of the TI. Beery Harmsen of the Dutch TI User Group provided a  "Who is Who in the TI Hall of Fame" quiz, where photos were to be assigned to names.

Bill Gaskill provided a presentation on a variety of hard to find TI-99 hardware and software including the original Navarone Widget (aka Cartridge Expander), The Missing Link from George Bowman dba Midwest Engineering, the Super Duper cart by George Bowman, which sports, 8K RAM, Mini Memory and Editor/Assembler all in one cartridge.
  • Marc Hull of Oklahoma City, OK releases TI Neverlander at the Chicago TI Faire.
  • Game programmer Gregg Lemke of Janesville, WI announces that the new name of his software development company is EKMELSOFT.

  • Joy Electronics owner and founder F. Rodgers deCordova dies on October 18th. Mr. deCordova ran Joy Electronics from 1981 until his retirement in 2005. He was a strong supporter of the TI-99 Community during that time and a frequent visitor to the North Dallas, TX User Group.

NOV 2008:  Bill Gaskill takes over stewardship of the Altman Fairware List from the Southwest 99ers Group in Tucson, AZ

  • PC Magazine announces on Nov 19th that it will become an on-line electronic publication only. The January 2009 printed edition will be the last hardcopy magazine.

DEC 2008: TI-99 cartridge collector Bryan Roppolo unveils the existence of the Atarisoft Robotron:2084 cartridge to the TI-99 Community in a post on the TI-99/4A and Geneve 9640 Home Computers On-Line User Group "Dear All, Something old has been discovered. A newly discovered TI game cartridge from the early 80s. I am going to unveil the cart on my birthday (December 8). This is a cart we do not have a dump of yet, and is the first chance for everyone to play this game. I'll reveal more hints tomorrow. Just wanted to see if anyone can come up with the game. Here's today's hint:  This game is a port of an arcade game.

  • Fred Kaal releases TIDir 5.2e with the ability to search for and display TI-Artist images. "When user wants to view a TI-artist picture and the _C file (color table) is selected, the _P file (picture) is  searched,else if the _P file is selected the _C file is searched. Both methods now shows the TI-artist picture in all its glory".
  • Richard Bell reports that, "... long time TIer and Western New York Ninety Niner  Jim Cavanaugh passed away at home on December 14th. Jim was the SYSOP of the "AM/CAN Friends BBS".
